Long Island Welding School
Frequently Asked Questions ..
Q: Are you accredited by the American Welding Society (AWS) ?
A: YES! We are an accredited AWS Testing Facility under the supervision of Robert F. Waite. Facility # is 12403.

Q: Do I need to pay for materials used during class?
A: NO WAY! Your course costs ($2,500) includes all steel material, welding equipment, wire, gas ect. We only ask you buy or bring in your own welding helmet, leather welding jacket, leather welding gloves & work boots - since these items need to be specially fitted to you! We can recommend a place to buy these items once you sign up.

Q: How much is testing?
A: Testing costs $1,600. Which is payable the day of testing. This is a separate cost from your course price ($2,500).

Q: Where will I test?
A: Our facility is an AWS Accredited Testing Facility (ATF), you will test in our facility. You will NOT be sent elsewhere to take your test. You will test on the same equipment that was used during your classes. We have 2 AWS Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI) on staff. One will administer the test and one will grade your plates. This is done to prevent a conflict of interest, which is a rule required by AWS.

Q: Can I just take the certification test at your school?
A: YES! If you are EXPERIENCED & ready for certification you can take the test at our school.

Q: How long are the classes?
A: Our classes are 6 consecutive Saturday's or Sunday's, 4 hours each day, 24 total hours.

Q: When are classes held?
A: Currently, our classes are held on Saturday's (8am-12pm & 12pm-4pm) & Sunday's (7am-11am). Night Classes are coming soon!

Q: Will I need to pay extra for my testing plates/material? What does the $1,600 test fee cover?
A: NO, you will NOT pay extra for the test plates or materials. Your testing costs of $1,600 will include your specially made test plates, fees payable to AWS, costs to have plates x-rayed & cut, gas, welding wire/rod etc. This fee also covers the paperwork sent to AWS for your certification credentials. It has come to our attention that not all schools in our area include this. If this paperwork is not sent to AWS including the specific area you tested for, you will NOT be able to use your certification on ANY jobsite.

Q: Will I ONLY receive a "certificate of completion" from your school if I take the certification test?
A: NO! If you pass, you will receive your CERTIFICATION LICENSE from AWS in the mail within 4-6 weeks of your test. This can be used on any job site throughout the world, your name and credentials will be in the AWS NATIONAL REGISTRY. You will receive a certificate from our school, saying you completed OUR classes.

Q: When do your classes start?
A: We do not have a set start date, the classes are continuous and you will start as soon as we have an opening for you. We will accommodate a specific request for a Saturday or Sunday class.

Q: Is this school like BOCES?
A: Not at all! We have a very small class size of 5-6 students at a time. You are working at your own pace. Everyone in the class is working towards a different goal. You will receive 1 on 1 personal attention from our instructor.

Q: Are your teachers accredited?
A: ABSOLUTELY! Our instructor is an AWS Certified Welding Educator & Inspector (CWI). We also have a 2nd AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) on staff who administers tests.

Q: Can you help with job placement?
A: YES! From time to time we have companies contacting our school looking to hire our welders. We pass this information off to our students to let them proceed with contacting the company. We cannot guarantee we can place you in a job, but we will definitely help!

Q: How much do your courses cost?
A: Each of our courses are $2,500 each, which is payable on your start date.

Q: Do you offer financing?
A. Currently, no. We will accept personal financing which you can obtain from your bank.

Q: Do I need a Basic & Advanced course to pass the AWS Certification Test?
A: It depends upon your experience. If you have never welded, you will need both to prepare you. If you have some experience, you will come in and be evaluated by our instructor to see how much more training you may or may not need.

Q: Is the test fees refundable?
A: NO! The test fees are payable whether you pass or fail, that is why we make sure you are 100% ready to take the test before hand.

Q: What is your success rate of testing?
A: Pretty impressive we would say! To date (3/2/2017) - We have administered 314 certification test, we have had 311 pass.

Q: What happens if I miss a class?
A: You can make it up! We just ask you give us some notice of your absence.

A: We can help! We are accredited to offer any testing you need, we can even create a test to cover all coupons you are looking for. We also offer the NYS DOB test for NYS DOT.

Q: Will the student be taught by an AWS Instructor?
A: YES! Students will be taught and supervised under our AWS CERTIFIED WELDING INSTRUCTOR. At no point, will anyone else be teaching the student.

Q: Why can't I wear contact lenses at your school?
A: Contact lenses are a BIG NO-NO at our school. Even with a welding helmet on, the plastic of the contact lenses can fuse to the eye. It is extremely painful and can cause permanent eye damage.

Q: Is Long Island Welding School affiliated with any other school?
A: NO! We only have 1 location, which is located at 59 Urban Avenue, Westbury, NY 11590
